The contribution of research to a healthier world

ABSTRACT:

Professor Liam Smeeth will outline some of the major challenges to health we will face over the coming decades. Using a range of examples of modern research tools and specific studies, he will then illustrate some of the ways that research can help us meet these challenges and will discuss likely future directions in global health.

BIOGRAPHY:

Liam Smeeth has served as the Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine since 2021. He is a professor of clinical epidemiology and a global leader in using computerized health data for research. Liam has 35 years of experience working as a medical doctor in the UK National Health Service. Previously, he was a Trustee of the British Heart Foundation and a non-executive director of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. His current contributions include membership of the strategic oversight committee for UK Biobank, and he is an elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Additionally, he co-chairs the BMJ Commission on the Future of the NHS and played a key role in co-leading the creation of the OpenSafely resource in response to the Covid pandemic.
