ACM SIGCOMM 2019 held in Beijing


From August 20th to 22nd, the ACM SIGCOMM 2019, organized by Tsinghua University, was held in Beijing. SIGCOMM is the flagship annual conference of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Special Interest Group on Data Communication (SIGCOMM) on the applications, technologies, architectures, and protocols for computer communication. The conference coincides with the 50th anniversary of the founding of SIGCOMM, which is also the first time ACM SIGCOMM has been held in Chinese mainland over the past 30 years.

At the opening ceremony, Xue Qikun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vice President of Tsinghua University, delivered a speech on behalf of Tsinghua University; Wu Jianping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chairman of the Department of Computer Science of Tsinghua University, and Wendy Hall, Professor of the University of Southampton and Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom, made separate speeches. Mr. Vint Cerf, founder of the internet and vice president of Google, congratulated SIGCOMM on its 50th anniversary. The opening ceremony was presided over by Yin Xia, Director of the Information and Technology Office of Tsinghua University.

Nearly 1200 researchers and students from the field of computer network communication from all over the world participated in the conference. The conference covered a wide range of topics related to network technology and application. It covered 32 high-quality frontier research reports, one SIGCOMM 50th anniversary forum, one keynote speech, four high-level group discussions, and one top-level hackathon recruitment interaction among the world's top technology companies. Apart from that, students from around the world presented a total of 43 posters and 19 demos.

The student research competition and hackathon held during the conference were actively participated in by the students of the Institute for Network Sciences and Cyberspace of Tsinghua University, and they achieved excellent results. Among them, Xi Zhaowei won the first place in the undergraduate student group of the Student Research Competition (SRC), and the ProtoCOOL group composed of Qiao Yi, Wang Haiping, Li Guanyu and Wang Shuhe won the second place in the hackathon.

The conference was successfully concluded on August 22nd. Professor Cui Yong, Vice Director of the Institute of Network Technology of Tsinghua University, presided over the closing ceremony as Vice Chair of ACM SIGCOMM 2019.
