Students and Teachers Meet for a More Internationalized Tsinghua Campus

On the morning of June 6, 2019, students and members of the Tsinghua community gathered in 22 Shengyinyuan to discuss ways to improve the Tsinghua international student experience on campus.

What are the challenges facing the international student body? How can the teachers from various departments improve for a more inclusive, internationalized community?

On a gathering called by the Student Community Management & Service Center (SCMSC) and the Center for Global Competence Development (CGCD), student representatives and members of the university were gathered together to discuss these questions.

“There is great value in these types of coming together across departments, disciplines with a sense of shared purpose and commitment to a common goal of a more internationalized Tsinghua,” said Xiang Chun, Director of Student Community Management & Service Center, at the end of the gathering. “We took close notes, and will work towards these goals.”

During the sharing session, students shared their experiences coming to Tsinghua in the roundtable discussion, staff from the SCMSC, CGCD, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and International Student & Scholar Center (ISSC) responded with explanations, cases, and solutions. A wide range of topics were discussed, from housing services, course selection, to timely communication channels.

The discussions focused on the various difficulties, opportunities for improvement faced by the international students from undergraduate, graduate and exchanges. Followed by possible solutions in different levels within the university.

The Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, David Zupko, also highlighted the various strategies taken by the university towards the university’s 2020 Goal.

“One of the most gratifying aspect of Tsinghua’s strategy to internationalize is the people who believes in the culture, and willing to work together towards the same mission,” said Liao Ying, director of CGCD. “The Center for Global Competence Development continues to work together with students, faculty, and members of the university towards a more collaborative, international, and friendly environment for all.”
