Mark Richards, Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Washington visits Tsinghua


On the morning of April 29th, Mark Richards, Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Washington visited Tsinghua University. Chen Xu, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council met with them in Gong Ziting. The two sides held in-depth exchanges on further expanding and deepening future cooperation between the two universities. Vice President and Provost Yang Bin attended the meeting.

During the talk, Chen Xu welcomed Professor Richards to Tsinghua University on the occasion of its 108th anniversary and expressed her gratitude to Professor Richards for his efforts to promote and support the cooperation between the two universities. Chen Xu noted that Tsinghua University attaches great importance to its relationship with the University of Washington. The Global Innovation eXchange (GIX) co-established by the two sides has thrived under the joint efforts of Tsinghua University, the University of Washington and Microsoft Company, achieving significant development. The enrollment scale is continuously expanding and the quality of students keeps improving. The first cohort of graduate students successfully graduated in January this year and is now playing an active and important role in internationally renowned enterprises. Chen Xu hoped that the two universities will carry out more high-level cooperation to meet the needs of the times, make new contributions to promote the exchange of education, scientific research and culture between China and the United States, and train more leading and innovative talents.

Professor Richards noted that it was a great honor to visit Tsinghua for the first time on the occasion of its 108th anniversary and thanked the university for its warm reception. He said that GIX is a significant result of cooperation and friendship between the two sides. The two sides should continue to deepen cooperation based on the success they have already achieved, and innovate ways to select and train students, so that students graduating from GIX can truly become the most innovative talents in various industries, and at the same time lead cultural exchanges between China and the United States.

The two sides also held in-depth discussions on further defining the future development direction of GIX and continuing to promote cooperation between Tsinghua University and the University of Washington in the fields of clean energy, advanced medical care and space technology.

The day before the meeting, Professor Richards watched the opening ceremony of Tsinghua University’s annual “Ma Yuehan Cup” track and field competition, and then visited Tsinghua students’ award-winning scientific entries in the “Challenge Cup” Competition as well as the GHDDI and Tsinghua University Science Park.

During the visit, Professor Richards also visited the office of GIX at Tsinghua University and talked about the development of GIX.

Mark Richards, an internationally renowned geophysicist, was appointed Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Washington in December 2018.
