"YEAH! World" Culture Series - It Takes Two to Tango

Last week, Tsinghua students put on an array of events to celebrate cultures from all around the world. On Tuesday, May 15th, the Latin American Student Association (LASO) gave students a chance to experience a bit of Argentina. The event’s attendees included Mr. Gavoita, a representative from the Argentine Embassy, as well as two tango instructors, Carlos Gardel and Xiang Qiong.

The event began with an introduction of LASO by its Vice President, Nikki Ottolia, followed by an insightful presentation, delivered by Mr. Gavoita, about the history of tango and how it came to be so popular today. Throughout the event, students were encouraged to try snacks such as tea and dulce de leche spread on thin crackers, a common snack in Argentina. At the end of the event, Mr. Gardel and Xiang Qiong gave participants a quick lesson on the basics of tango. Though the intensity and intimacy of tango is a stark contrast to traditional Chinese dances, students quickly warmed up to the culture and enjoyed the event.

Though the past week of cultural celebration has come to an end, the lessons and appreciation that students have gained will continue to grow.
